Pacific Justice – Micronesia Internship
The Micronesian remote internship is for any law students passionate about social justice and interested in learning more about the complex and dynamic workings of law in the Pacific. This internship will give you significant experience and insights into the unique law systems of Micronesia.
How it works
You’ll be partnered with a lawyer from the Micronesian Legal Services Commission (MLSC) and be provided with training and mentoring in delivering community legal services to Micronesian communities. In return, students will be asked to commit one day a week to complete valuable work for the organisation. With the lawyer you will work towards delivering a report or project for the organisation. Past students have completed projects on the role of civil legal aid in climate change, human trafficking from the lens of legal aid, CLE material for peoples of Micronesia and the legal obstacle to health care in Micronesia.
Developing and researching Pacific law is an exciting area to be in and there are many opportunities in the field for further research. This is an unprecedented opportunity to work with lawyers in the Pacific on dynamic and emerging issues in a diverse and highly complex region.
Getting Involved
LRSJ Pacific Law Project offers the opportunity for ANU Law students to complete internships in the Pacific region. Several LRSJ alums have worked with MLSC mentors on this internship program. If interested, drop an email to lrsj@anu.edu.au
Pacific Law Project Updates
During pre-COVID period, this project hosted several introductory training session on law and justice in the Pacific. The sessions were primarily aimed at those who volunteer or intern with the Micronesian Legal Services Corporation as part of the ANU College of Law’s program with MLSC.
ANU-MLSC Remote Internship
Four groups of volunteers worked with various solicitors from the MLSC on specific project areas to conduct research and develop various resources that are of value to the organization.
Research with Pacific LRCs
In collaboration with RegNet, students have conducted research into various legal issues in the Pacific in response to terms of reference provided by Vanuatu Law Reform Commission and Solomon Islands Law Reform Commission.
